D-STAR

on the Island...

The History D-STAR, a standard published in 2001, is the result of three years of research funded by the Japanese government and administered by the JARL to investigate digital technologies for amateur radio. The research involved Japanese radio manufacturers and other observers. Icom provided the equipment used for development and testing. D-STAR radios and repeaters have been tested extensively and are now ready for public use. MARC has 2 D_STAR repeaters on the island, with the distinction of being the first ones in Northern Ontario.

VE3RII is ALIVE!

on 20 Oct 2012 VE3RII went on the air from Manitowaning, Ontario. More info can be found on it's page; click on the repeater tab at the top of the page and pick VE3RII from the list. Many many thanks to all that helped!

Repeater work....

The club has been very busy lately...

Last weekend, (29 September) we installed a multi-coupler at both the RMI site and the RQQ site... A multi-coupler allows you to connect more than one radio system to a single antenna... It does come at a price tho... the multi-coupler adds additional loss to the feedline, which can result in a somewhat degraded signal.

At the RQQ site, we multi-coupled the simplex Asterisk node to the antenna used by VE3RXR (D-STAR); we are very pleased with the results. We are seeing greatly increased range with the Asterisk node, and as of this writing, we have not seen any decreased range with VE3RXR.

At the VE3RMI site, we are muti-coupling in a radio for an APRS digipeater. Tho we don't have the radio installed yet (having issues with the Motorola radio we are going to use) the multi-coupler is in place; we are seeing some signal degredation on RMI; we may take the muti-coupler out of line until we install a pre-amplifier on RMI's receiver; this should make it hotter than it was before we installed the multi-coupler.

We are also in the process of installing a new UHF repeater/Asterisk node in Manitowaning. Use the 'Repeaters' link at the top of the page, and choose VE3RII to see the details!

Keep checking back! 73 es cul de VE3WVA
