D-STAR, a standard published in 2001, is the result of three years of research funded by the Japanese government and administered by the JARL to investigate digital technologies for amateur radio. The research involved Japanese radio manufacturers and other observers. Icom provided the equipment used for development and testing. D-STAR radios and repeaters have been tested extensively and are now ready for public use. MARC has 2 D_STAR repeaters on the island, with the distinction of being the first ones in Northern Ontario.

It saddens me to report the club station at the US Naval Base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba was destroyed by hurricane Sandy earlier this month.
I spent many happy hours there between Jan 1996 and the spring of 2000 as a civilian contractor aboard the base, looking after 150 copiers under contract with the company I worked for. My GTMO call was KG4AU.
Check out the weblinks page under Contacts/Links, Amateur Radio General info (top of the page) for links to more pictures and info on GTMO.
